Let’s get one thing straight—flying with toddlers is basically an Olympic sport. You need snacks, patience, and a little bit of luck.

As a mom of three energetic boys, I’ve learned a few things the hard way. Like the time my 2-year-old peeled a banana and threw it across the aisle. Or when we watched the safety video… sixteen times in a row. 🫠

Whether it’s your first flight or your fifth, these 15 toddler-tested airplane survival tips will help you stay sane—and maybe even enjoy the ride (a little).

1. Bring New (or “New to Them”) Toys

Colorful toys on a white wooden surface: a blue and yellow train, pastel blocks, number bricks, a red car, and a rainbow stacker

Even something from the dollar store feels magical when it’s a surprise. Wrap it like a gift—unwrap time is part of the entertainment!

2. Sticker Books Are Your BFF

No noise, no mess, and endless peeling and sticking. Reusable sticker pads are gold.

3. Don’t Forget a Tablet (No Shame Here)

Load it up before takeoff with shows, games, and music. I like to bring kid-safe headphones and a backup pair because… toddlers.

4. Post-It Notes = Genius

Five colorful sticky notes—yellow, green, orange, blue, and pink—are evenly spaced on a corkboard

Let them stick them on the window, tray table, seat, their face—whatever works. Cheap and weirdly entertaining.

5. Pack Snacks Like a Pro

Bring a snack box with variety: puffs, fruit, crackers, raisins. Novelty keeps it fun—and keeps tiny hands busy.

6. Magnetic Drawing Boards

Skip crayons that roll under the seat. Magnetic doodle boards are mess-free and addictive.

7. Audiobooks or Songs with Headphones

Simple stories or sing-alongs give their brain a break from screen time. Bonus if it’s interactive, like call-and-response songs.

8. Flashcards or Mini Photo Books

Make a small DIY photo book of family members, pets, or favorite toys. Toddlers love recognizing faces!

9. Use a Window Cling Set

Soft gel clings stick to airplane windows and are so fun to squish and rearrange.

10. Water Wow Books

Just add water and watch the color appear. No mess and they can be reused on the way back too.

11. Puzzle Snack Containers

Use a tackle box-style container and fill each compartment with a different snack. Let them “choose their own adventure.”

12. Blow Bubbles… in a Book

Skip the soap. Try bubble pop books or sensory poppers to satisfy fidgety fingers.

13. Toddler Travel Tray

Especially helpful for lap-sitting kids. It gives them a flat space for toys, snacks, or coloring.

14. Toy Rotation Strategy

Don’t hand over everything at once! Stash a few items for later in the flight when attention spans run low.

15. Pack a “Calm Down Kit”

Include a soft lovey, calming essential oil roller (lavender), and a cozy blanket. Great for transitions or overtired moments.

Bonus Tip (From Me to You)

Don’t stress if nothing works.
Sometimes all you can do is breathe, smile politely at nearby passengers, and whisper “this too shall pass” while handing your toddler their 5th granola bar.

You’re doing great. ✈️
